The work of collecting, sorting and
processing recycled materials only benefits the environment if those
materials are manufactured into new products. But that won't happen
unless there is a market for those goods. Luckily right here in
Southern Indiana we have a co-op which stocks
many products that use postconsumer recycled content.
Post-consumer recycled content is the by
product of items collected in commercial and
residential recycling programs and turned into something new - like a
cereal box. Many of the brands at the coop use post-consumer recycled
content as their main source of packaging. Nature's Path Cereal, for
example, makes all of it's cereal boxes from recycled cardboard.
Burt's Bee's uses a lot of recycled plastic in it's products now, and they plan to have 100% of packaging made from post-consumer recycled plastics by the year 2020.
In addition to a nice selection of
recycled paper
products, the co-op also carries recycled aluminum foil, plastic trash
bags, and even toothbrushes made from recycled plastic. Many companies
proudly list the amount of post-consumer recycled product on their
labels. So next time you are shopping take a look at products and see
how much post-consumer recycled content is used by the company.
Lost River Co-op has brought innovative "green" products right to us and kept our recycled goods out of the graveyard. It's just one more reason to shop the Co-op!
